CWD (CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE) WAS FOUND IN A KILL OF A MULE DEER BUCK in zone 508. The main carrier of the disease seem prevalent in Mule deer, especially in the bucks. One report stats that muley bucks are 80% plus of diseased heads turned in for testing.
For your safety, DO NOT consume the meat till you have it tested. You can turn in the head for testing. Antlers and skull plate may be removed before you bag the head. The government has set up 24 hour freezers at the Fish & Wildlife offices in Athabasca and Spruce Grove, The Shell station in Morinville and the UFA store in Westlock. DEBONE THE CARCASS and freeze the meat. DO NOT split the carcass or cut through the spinal column or save any bones. Wait for the test results.
CWD turned up in Alberta in Elk and Whitetail Deer farms in 2002 and was found in Eastern Alberta in Mule Deer in 2005. The main carriers of the disease are Mule Deer followed by Whitetail Deer, Elk and the odd Moose. The disease has been moving west in the province every year and has made it’s way to zone 508. For more information, look up your hunting regulations and be aware.
Three volunteers have working on your gun range to bring it up to spec to pass our required government inspection. There are a numbers of new rule signs at the range and the 300 hundred yard bench has barrel limiter installed on it. We should be done hopefully next week.
‘Our next meeting is Wednesday, Oct 29. If you want to be part of the club executive, now’s your chance as this is the meeting to take in. So, go sight in your rifles and have fun out there—-Joe
