SPRING IS BACK, SO ARE THE BEARS

In 2006, Alberta ended the annual sport grizzly Bear hunt. The government field biologists were convinced that the bear numbers were way down. The number of bear conflicts continued to rise along with a number of human fatalities. In October 2025, a network of hunters was established to deal with problem bears ONLY. Seven thousand hunters applied for this position. The program last year dealt with four cattle killing bears and only one was shot. Cardston County has applied for the Sport Grizzly Hunt to be reintroduced as their problem is getting serious. Are there Grizzly bears here? They are native in the Swan Hills area and have been spotted at Fort Assiniboine and Vega in the last two years. Black bears can be dangerous too, in the wrong conditions as a young woman was killed west of Fort Assiniboine a few years ago. Be careful out there.

This Saturday, your club will be at the Bablitz Center in Barrhead, at The Open Skys Rural Living Expo from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm promoting what we do and selling our new Raffle tickets.
